1. Integer Addition & Subtraction Rules (+, -)

  • Addition with Same Signs: Add absolute values and keep the common sign. Example: (-5) + (-4) = -9.
  • Addition with Different Signs: Subtract smaller absolute value from larger, and keep the sign of the larger absolute value. Example: (-27) + 39 = 12.
  • Direct Subtraction (Same Signs): When you have enough tiles of that sign, simply take them away! Example: -5 - (-2) = -3 (Start with 5 red negative tiles, take away 2 red negative tiles, leaving 3 red negative tiles).
  • Subtraction (Keep-Change-Change / Add the Opposite): When subtracting a negative across signs, convert subtraction of a negative into adding a positive! Example: 3 - (-2) = 3 + 2 = 5.

2. Integer Multiplication & Division Rules (×, ÷)

  • Same Signs: Result is ALWAYS POSITIVE (+). Example: (-8) × (-9) = +72 and (-45) ÷ (-5) = +9.
  • Different Signs: Result is ALWAYS NEGATIVE (-). Example: (-4) × 7 = -28 and 63 ÷ (-7) = -9.

3. Intuitive Unit Tile & Model Representations

Yellow tiles represent positive (+1) and Red tiles represent negative (-1).

4. Absolute Value Concept |x| & Distance on Number Line

  • Absolute Value Definition: The distance a number is from zero on a number line. Distance is ALWAYS non-negative. Example: |-12| = 12.
  • Distance Between Two Points: The distance between two points a and b is given by |a - b|. Example: Distance between -16 and 8 is |-16 - 8| = |-24| = 24.
  • Outer Negation: If a negative sign is outside absolute value bars, evaluate inside first, then apply outer sign: -|-8| / 2 = -8 / 2 = -4.
